PHYSICAL THERAPY AND FREQUENCY SPECIFIC MICROCURRENT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Training & Certification Questions
Q: What exactly is FSM and how does it differ from regular electrical stimulation we already use? A: FSM uses microcurrent (millionths of an amp) at specific frequencies, compared to TENS which uses milliamps. The current is subsensory – patients can’t feel it. What makes it unique is the frequency specificity – certain frequencies appear to resonate with specific conditions and tissues. It’s been shown to increase ATP production by 500% and has documented effects on reducing inflammatory cytokines.
Q: Do I need to be a licensed healthcare provider to take this course? A: Yes, you need a license that allows you to use electrical stimulation on patients. Physical therapists are perfectly qualified since e-stim is within your scope of practice.
Q: How long is the training and what’s the time commitment? A: The Core seminar is 5 days of intensive training. We also offer it as an online course if that works better for scheduling. There’s a lot of material – we tell people not to worry about absorbing everything at once. The patient responses will teach you as you practice.
Q: Is there ongoing support after the initial training? A: Absolutely. We have webinars, a practitioner Facebook group, email support, and additional advanced training. The FSM community is very supportive of new practitioners.
Clinical Application Questions
Q: What conditions can we treat with FSM? A: The FDA approval is for pain management as a TENS device, but we teach protocols for myofascial pain, neuropathic pain, acute injuries, chronic pain conditions, and many others. You’ll learn to think about tissue pathology differently – what tissue is it, what’s wrong with it, what caused it, and how can you change it.
Q: How does this fit with our current PT treatments? A: FSM works beautifully as an adjunct to manual therapy, exercise, and other PT interventions. Many of our practitioners are PTs who use it to enhance their manual therapy results. It can address underlying inflammation and tissue dysfunction that makes your other treatments more effective.
Q: How long does it take to see results? A: That’s the remarkable thing – when the frequencies are correct, you often see tissue changes within minutes. For myofascial pain, patients averaged 4-6 treatments. For neuropathic pain, we published data showing 65% fully recovered in an average of 4.6 treatments.
Business & Practice Questions
Q: What’s the ROI on adding FSM to our practice? A: The equipment pays for itself quickly. Even treating just 5 FSM patients daily at $20 extra for e-stim generates $20,000 annually. Most practices do much more. It’s reimbursable through standard e-stim codes (97032) and creates a positive differentiation in your market.
Q: What equipment do I need and what’s the cost? A: You need a 2-channel microcurrent device with 3-digit frequency specificity. Entry-level units start around $2,000-3,000. We work with Precision Distributing for equipment. The investment typically pays off in 3-6 months.
Q: How do I bill for FSM treatments? A: You bill using standard e-stim codes (97032 for attended stimulation), trigger point therapy (97140), or neuromuscular re-education (97112) depending on what you’re treating. It fits within existing PT billing structures.
Q: Will this help with patient retention and outcomes? A: Yes, dramatically. When patients experience rapid pain relief and functional improvement, they’re more likely to complete their PT program. Many practitioners report it’s transformed their practice satisfaction and patient outcomes.
Safety & Scope Questions
Q: Are there any contraindications we need to worry about? A: The main contraindication is pregnancy (we don’t run current through a pregnant uterus). We’re cautious with pacemakers, though we’ve never had problems. Cancer patients shouldn’t be treated directly over tumor sites, but you can treat other areas safely.
Q: Is this within PT scope of practice? A: Absolutely. If you can use electrical stimulation, you can use FSM. You’re staying within your scope – we’re just teaching you to use e-stim more effectively with specific frequencies.
Q: How do I explain this to patients and physicians? A: We teach you to keep it simple: “This is a specialized form of electrical stimulation that uses specific frequencies to reduce inflammation and promote healing.” The results speak for themselves.
Q: What if I’m skeptical about the frequency claims? A: Fair enough – I was skeptical too until I saw the results. We have published research showing specific frequency effects on inflammatory markers. But honestly, the best proof is trying it. The frequencies either work or they don’t – if they don’t work, they just have no effect.
